Waffles – This light and fluffy homemade Belgian waffle recipe is so easy to make from scratch. Try adding fruit or other toppings and I think you’ll find you’ll never need another waffle recipe!

I started cooking at a very young age and this homemade waffle recipe is one of my earliest memories of making it myself, for my family. They were a staple of my childhood and truly are the best Belgian waffle recipe for light and fluffy waffles.

Belgian waffles are thicker and generally larger than regular waffles because they are made with a waffle maker with deeper grids. These deep pockets are perfect for holding delicious puddles of syrup.

Sweet Milk Waffles

Belgian waffle batter usually contains a leavening agent. Our secret ingredient for waffles that are crispy on the outside but light and fluffy in the center is to incorporate beaten egg whites into the batter.

Whip the egg whites: Separate the egg whites and yolks into two separate bowls. (Be careful not to get any yellow yolks with the whites or they won’t whip until firm). Use an electric mixer to beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.

Make the dough: Add the milk and oil to the bowl with the egg yolks and mix well. Add the dry ingredients and mix well.

Serving: Top these crispy Belgian waffles with my delicious homemade sauce, powdered sugar and any kind of fruit, like bananas or berries. You can even skip the syrup and add Nutella, jam or peanut butter instead.

To freeze: Allow waffles to cool completely and store in a freezer-safe ziplock bag for up to 3 months. Reheat in toaster oven or microwave.

Meet your new breakfast obsession: Waffles. Imagine starting your day with these golden beauties, crispy on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside. They are pure joy on the plate, graced with a hint of vanilla that makes every bite feel like a little celebration. The aroma of those waffles sizzling in the waffle maker alone is worth setting an early alarm.

But don’t just dream about them – grab your apron and bang! The magic of these waffles lies in their simplicity. Pantry staples come together to create something extraordinary. We’re talking wheat flour, sugar and a little baking powder combined with eggs, milk and a drizzle of melted butter. Mix it all up, pop it into a hot waffle maker, and voila—a homemade breakfast that makes every morning feel like Sunday.

First, let’s hook up that waffle iron. Preheat it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and while it heats up, we will prepare our dough. As with an oven, preheating ensures your waffles start cooking as soon as they hit the iron, giving them a perfectly crispy exterior.

Take a large bowl and mix the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder and salt. We are combining all dry ingredients first to ensure they are evenly distributed. This is important because it ensures that each waffle has just the right balance of sweetness and fluffiness.

In another bowl we are going to mix the eggs, milk, melted butter and vanilla extract. Not only does this mix these ingredients together, it also starts to incorporate air into our batter, which is key to achieving light and airy waffles.

Now it’s time to put our wet and dry ingredients together. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture and stir until well incorporated. Keep in mind that some chunks are okay. Over-mixing can result in hard waffles, and nobody wants that!

With the dough ready, we move on to the most exciting part: cooking the waffles! Place the batter in the preheated waffle maker, being careful not to overfill it. Close the lid and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions or until the waffle is golden brown and crispy.

Once the waffle is perfectly cooked, transfer it to a plate and voila – a beautiful homemade waffle ready to be devoured. Top with butter, drizzle with maple syrup, or add your favorite fruit and enjoy!

There could be a few reasons for this. It could be that your waffle maker is not hot enough, so make sure it is properly preheated before adding the batter. Another reason could be the dough itself – if it’s too thin, the waffles can be soggy instead of crunchy. Lastly, don’t open the waffle maker too early – give it time to cook properly and make the waffles crispy.

Absolutely! You can prepare the waffle batter and keep it covered in the fridge overnight. However, you may need to stir it briefly before using, as the ingredients may separate slightly.

While you can certainly cook the batter in a griddle pan, the end result will be more like pancakes than waffles. They will still taste great, but you won’t get the same crispy edges and deep pockets that a waffle maker provides.

Yes, feel free to customize your waffles with add-ons! Just be sure to fold them into the dough carefully to keep them from sinking.
