Brooke Sjoberg is a freelance writer for the Daily Dot. He completed his BA in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 2020. Want to try Chipotle Catering? We have a personal review for you. This is my 9th year living in Los Angeles and this was the first Christmas that my whole family came over for the holidays. I wanted it to be special, so last weekend I gathered a bunch of friends and threw a Tamalada, a tamale-making party. As luck would have it, Chipotle reached out and asked if we would review food service for the 20th.
I ordered The Big Spread, which included a choice of three meats (chicken, carnitas, steak, sofrita with spicy tofu or barbacoa), two sides of rice, two sides of beans, and fajitas. salsa, cheese, sour cream, shredded lettuce and guacamole plus chips, crispy taco shells and corn and flour tortillas. There was also a large sack with bowls, napkins, forks, knives, spoons and crockery.
None of us could believe how much food we had. Or how good it was. Some friends had never tried Chipotle before and I was excited to introduce them to one of our family favorites. I have to admit, we are big fans of Chipotle and eat there when we travel or need a quick meal. My kids were so excited that they could have it at home (and maybe at one of their next birthday parties).
Nothing Like A Catering Box Of Sides 🙃
No one left the party hungry. Most of us had seconds and my family had Chipotle for dinner that night and the next. I was also able to collect some of the guest’s leftovers as well for Sarah for her trip. The Big Spread is $295 (I got it free for this review), which seems pretty reasonable considering how much food we got (and bowls, utensils, napkins) and how easy the spread was to put together.
My only complaint was that the order had to be placed 24 hours in advance – exactly 24 hours. I called the Chipotle Catering 800 number and ordered at 12:30 but wanted pickup at 11:30. There was no way I could call the store I was ordering from (or couldn’t figure out how), so I waited about 10 minutes while Chipotle Catering called the store (no guarantee they could change it). It worked out well and my husband was able to pick up the order at 11:30, but next time I will definitely call at least 24 hours in advance. Other than that everything was fantastic.
After eating a cup (or two) of Chipotle, we started making our tamales. I soaked the corn husks overnight and bought the bulk from Northgate Market. Each person brought either a filling, wine, or dessert. I cooked the pork shoulder overnight in the crockpot, a friend made chili Colorado, another made chopped cilantro chicken, and another brought ground New Mexico green chiles.
It took us a couple of hours to assemble the tamales, and everyone went home with at least a dozen.

They served tamales for Christmas dinner (we had 18 people) and my family seemed to really enjoy them. To learn more about tamale assembly, check out this video I made last year.
The best part of the tamalada was sitting on the tablet while we made the tamales and ate them. It’s not often that we get together without the kids and talk. If the whole team is already done on burritos, there’s also Burritos by the Box. Each burrito is individually wrapped, packed in packets near the box, and ready for whatever burrito bash you have planned. Plus, for every two burritos, Chipotle includes a bag of chips, tomato-green chile salsa, sour cream and, of course, guac.
